In Choi was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. He obtained his B.A. in economics from Seoul National University in 1981 and his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1990. After graduating from college, he served in the Korean navy for three years as a supply officer. He is now Professor at Sogang University in Seoul, Korea. Prior to this position, he was on the faculty of the Ohio State University, Kookmin University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also taught at Yale, University of Southern California, Hitotsubashi University and the University of Bonn as a visiting scholar. His research focus has been on time series and panel data analysis, and he has published numerous articles in leading journals in economics and statistics. He also wrote the book “Almost all about unit roots: foundations, developments and applications” (2015, Cambridge University Press). He is a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics and received Multa Scripsit Award and Plura Scripsit Award from Econometric Theory, one of the leading journals in economics and statistics, Chongram Award from the Korean Economic Association, Dasan Econimics Award from the Korea Economic Daily and Vice Prime Minister of Education's Award for Excellence in Research. He is currently a Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Econometrics (published by MDPI) and President of the Korean Econometric Society.
